Music by Charles TurnerThis web site is devoted to my compositions and my interests as a composer and performer. Please check out the 'Recent work' link above to listen to some music I composed this year.
NocturneThis is a new, shortish piece for piano and celesta. I have been enjoying taking photos lately, and have always enjoyed looking at the skyline at dusk, when the trees become very dark and the sky seems to lighten before it too gets dark. The music tries to embody those moments in sound.
A Flight of AngelsThis is a new piece that I wrote for two of the musical girls who go to my church and perform in the Youth Bells (handbell ensemble). Jennifer's school just discontinued its band program, so she has nowhere to play and nobody from whom to take lessons. She asked if she could play in church, so I wrote the piece for her, Sarah (a good flautist), and wife Nancy on piano. I have asked them to perform it on the Christmas Concert on December 13.
Two new handbell piecesI have added two new handbell pieces to the 'handbells' page, both composed over the summer, along with several others which I can't render digitally because of the handbell 'special' effects in them. 'Holden's Diadem' is a fantasy on the wonderful Oliver Holden hymn 'All Hail the Power of Jesus' Name'. 'Conundrum' written for five ringers and is as much a conundrum to me as it is to you!
The Vorpal SextetNew on the 'recent work' page, you will find 'The Vorpal Sextet' for flute, clarinet, horn, piano, viola and doublebass. This is a single-movement piece of about seven minutes duration; it is a small homage to Charles Dodgson, and is based on his poem 'Jabberwocky'. See if you can hear the 'snicker-snacks' and the galumphing; I'm especially fond of those.
'Burrowing' performance in HartfordMy piece 'Burrowing' will be performed on Aug 30 by New Music Hartford at 3:00PM ArtSpace Gallery in Hartford, CT. It's part of a benefit concert for the South Park Inn homeless shelter. DETAILS AT http://tinyurl.com/mz23mg
BurrowingA little piece written in 45 minutes for a contest in which you are supposed to write something in one hour.
A new piano pieceOn the 'recent work' page is a new piano piece called "The Wind is Jealous of the Eye". This is a phrase from Chuang Tze which appealed to me a great deal. It is short - perhaps another book of preludes is going to materialize.
The Six SiegfriedsI have added a new page devoted to a sort of open-ended set of orchestral pieces. There may be more than six someday, but the assonance in the title and the other titles appealed to me. I have in mind a sort of eccentric 19th Century explorer, scientist and hero, and the episodes are imaginary pictures from his life and exploits.
Clocks Gone WrongA new piece on the 'recent works' page. My clocks all have too little time on them, it seems. For celestas, harp and percussion.
